The Holy Innocents

Today, the feast day of the Holy Innocents, reminds us of how destructive anger and jealousy can be.  King Herod's anger and insecurity caused him to murder many innocent children in order to attempt to kill Jesus.  As a parent, I can not imagine the pain and anguish the mother's and father's of these little ones must have felt.  We must be aware of our own insecurities and ask God to make our heart pure like the Holy Innocents so we do not let our own jealousy get the better of us.  In a world filled with gossip, hate, and greed, it is easy to get wrapped up in constantly comparing what we have to others.  We need to remind ourselves that we are blessed and the Lord provides us with what we need when we need it.  We need to keep in mind the value of  all human life, both born and unborn.  We thank God for these first little Holy martyrs and ask for their continual prayers.
